Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas Recipe
I made my kids day last week when I made homemade tortillas for dinner, instead of using store bought. My homemade flour tortillas recipe is a family favorite around here. It makes the perfect tortillas that are soft and delicious!
Truthfully, I don’t make homemade tortillas very often because they feel time consuming, and when we are having tacos, I want something quick and easy. But, the days when I do take the extra 30 minutes to make these, I never ever regret it!
My dad always loved making homemade flour tortillas when I was a kid. He’s the one that taught me how and I always think of him when I make them. I remember him standing in the kitchen with his homemade stripped apron rolling out the dough and flipping hot tortillas over the stove. They are such fond, happy memories and I hope my kids remember me making them too!

How To Make Flour Tortillas
Homemade flour tortillas are so cheap to make! The ingredients are all staples in my pantry, so it’s nice to be able to make them homemade every now and then, rather than having to spend money at the store to buy tortillas.
To make flour tortillas you will need to first, mix the below ingredients together in a bowl:
- 5 cups flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
Next, use a pastry cutter to cut in 1/2 cup shortening. You can use a fork if you don’t have a pastry cutter, but I personally prefer the pastry cutter! Keep cutting until the shortening is mixed evenly throughout the dry ingredients.
Form a well in the bowl and add 2 cups of boiling water. Using a spoon, mix all ingredients together well.
Knead the dough for 5 minutes and then separate it into 12 equally sized balls.
Next, you will need to roll each ball into a circle until it is flat and very thin.
Fry each tortilla in a hot frying pan for 1-2 minutes, or until it’s just barely beginning to brown. Flip and fry the other side of the tortilla for 1 minute. Be careful not to cook the tortilla to long or it will become dry and brittle.
Keep the tortillas warm until it is time to use them. These flour tortillas are perfect for fajitas, tacos, burritos and enchiladas.
